Dangerous storms on the way for Queensland

The thunderstorm season is well and truly upon Queensland, with most of the state set for an electrified week.

A trough swung through the region yesterday night, triggering heavy showers and storms. The sudden bucket full of rain, 11 millimetres, dropped the temperature by 3.4 degrees in 20 minutes.

Temperatures will continue to stay on the mild side over the weekend, thanks to the cooler south-easterly winds behind the trough.

However the dangerous weather will not go away.

Storms and showers will fire up right across Queensland today along the path of the trough, from Mount Isa all the way to Hervey Bay, and possibly even down to Goondiwindi.

For those storms between Injune and the coast, there's also the possibility for winds in excess of 90 km/h, enough to start breaking branches from trees.

Tomorrow will likely see the thundery activity retreat to the interior, before another burst of storms scatters throughout the region on Monday and Tuesday ahead of a similar trough.

Models indicate the chance of some locally heavy falls from Maryborough to Maroochydore, although the largest totals look like they'll occur over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.

With heat building, and moisture funnelling in from the tropics, the end of the week looks like a large 'selection of convection' will continue until the end of the week.
