A man authorities had described as dangerous has been arrested on the Victorian border.

Daniel McQuilton, 27, went missing about 4.15pm on Wednesday in Sydney's inner-city suburb of Darlinghurst after his court-ordered electronic monitoring device was removed.

An alarm indicating he might have removed his tracking bracelet alerted police.

Police would not discuss McQuilton's criminal history, saying only that he was to be considered dangerous.

McQuilton was found nearly 500km from Sydney on the Victorian border.

Police arrested the man at 5am on Friday in Wodonga. He will be extradited to NSW.

Corrective Services said McQuilton deviated from his approved schedule of movements and discarded his tracking equipment. Both were breaches of the terms of his court-ordered Extended Supervision Order.
