Damaging winds are expected in central and eastern Victoria this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for people in the North Central, North East, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts.

Sustained winds of 60 to 70km/h, gusting to 105km/h, are expected as a cold front crosses Victoria.

The warning affects areas including Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Wangaratta, Wodonga, Seymour, Warragul and the Gippsland Lakes.

It comes as tens of thousands of campers and holiday-makers enjoy the Christmas-New Year break.

The State Emergency Service says people should move vehicles under cover or away from trees. They should also secure or store loose items and stay clear of fallen powerlines.

A total fire ban is already in place for the North East region.
