Damaging winds and thunderstorms to hit South Australia

Despite a week of pleasant conditions, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned South Australians it is all about to end.

A severe weather warning has been issued for damaging winds, possible thunderstorms and an onslaught of hail across the state, with winds averaging 50-70km/h.

Strong to gale force northwest to westerly winds will hit hardest in the western and central parts of the state this afternoon and into the evening. Hard hit areas will be Adelaide, Elliston, Port Lincoln, Cleve, Maitland, Kingscote and Clare.

Localised winds of up to 110km/h are also likely, mainly in the Eyre Peninsula region and coastal surrounds.

Adelaide residents are on standby until mid-afternoon to late evening when the full extent is expected. Adelaide will also cop showers with rainfall around the Adelaide Hills area.

Adelaide had previously experienced its warmest July day in five years on Thursday, enjoying 22.7 degree temperatures.

Chillier conditions are expected to continue across the weekend, dropping to 13 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.

A severe weather warning for the Lower South East district has been cancelled.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;

* Secure or put away loose items around your property.

* Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe.
