Dad killed in ute crash while son was behind the wheel

Powered by

A South Australian father has died after the ute his son was driving flipped on a country road.

Police said the 17-year-old learner driver was behind the wheel when the vehicle left Bethel Road, near Kapunda, just before 7.30am.

The ute flipped before landing on its roof, killing the teen’s 50-year-old father who was in the passenger seat.

The driver was taken to Kapunda Hospital with minor injuries.

Residents expressed grief for the young driver, with Allison Tilley called the incident “the worst thing a young person could face”.

“It’s absolutely horrifying,” fellow local Bailey Dini said.

Major Crash Detectives spent hours combing the scene this morning, trying to determine how the crash unfolded.

Ms Tilley said cars often lose control on the area's dirt roads.

“They can be dangerous, especially because there is loose gravel… and quite often they skid.”

Investigations are ongoing.
