Cyclone Fletcher not expected to reform

Ex-cyclone Fletcher isn't expected to reform overnight, however, the far north may not have seen the last of the storm.

While a cyclone warning for the Northern Territory and Queensland border has been cancelled, the system is still being monitored as it moves inland over the Gulf Country district.

Ex-cyclone Fletcher was about 30km north northeast of Karumba and 55km north northwest of Normanton at 4pm (AEST), the Bureau of Meteorology said.

It was moving south at 5km/h.

Gales are no longer expected to lash coastal and island communities between the Gilbert River Mouth and the Northern Territory and Queensland border on Wednesday night.

But heavy rain is still likely to fall in the Gulf Country and Peninsula districts over the next couple of days.

Cyclone Fletcher made landfall as a category one storm between Karumba and the Gilbert River Mouth in the Gulf of Carpentaria on Monday night but was a fizzer.
