Cyclist who filmed dooring speaks out

A Melbourne woman who was doored while cycling along one of Melbourne's busiest streets has spoken out about the painful collision captured on camera.

The 28-year-old, who did not want to be named, told Nine News that she does not want to get in anyone's way when she's riding.

"I take the risk and I know when I'm riding down there, I go very slowly," she said.

"When I first started riding I was terrified of that lane, but it is the only practical and efficient way to get from work to home."

She suffered bruises when a taxi passenger opened his door as she tried to overtake the car on the left hand side, close to the gutter.

The cyclist was riding in a cycling refuge, but not a designated bike lane.

After being hit by the door, the woman demanded the man's details.

He refused to hand them over to the woman and walked away, but she pursued him on foot.

"The way people like you ride around is disgusting," he said to her.

The 65-year-old Brighton man who opened the taxi door has turned himself in to police, but he has not been charged.

Thirty percent of doorings take place on four roads in Melbourne, including Collins Street.
