A search is underway for a man who hit a cyclist and later abandoned his car in Melbourne’s west this afternoon.

A white Holden Rodeo ute was driving east on Barkly Street near Argyle Street when it is believed to have hit the cyclist and a parked car at around 3.15pm.

The driver then ran off on foot along Argyle Street and was last seen jumping a fence in Essex Street.

The man is believed to be Caucasian in appearance, around 182cm tall with a solid build and short brown hair.

He was wearing bone-coloured overalls, a black T-shirt, a black long-sleeve top and white runners at the time. Police believe he may have taken off the overalls.

The cyclist died at the scene.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
