Cyclist killed in collision with car in central Victoria

A cyclist has been killed in central Victoria after being hit by a car.

Victoria Police confirmed a blue Commodore station wagon had been travelling east on Fogartys Gap Road in Ravenswood, south of Bendigo, about 6.25pm when he collided with the cyclist near the Calder Highway.

The male cyclist died at the scene.

He has not yet been formally identified.

The driver, a man aged in his 60s, was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.

Crash investigation police are still trying to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal incident.

"The driver is assisting us," Detective Sergeant Darren Williams said.

"We are looking at whether alcohol, drugs or fatigue were issues and whether distraction was an issue as well."

The death sadly brings the state’s total road death toll to 197 for the year.
