Customer's narrow miss as car slams into shopfront

A man has narrowly avoided death after a car ploughed into a shopfront in Adelaide's north.

He was walking on the footpath outside the Foodland grocery store in Hove when the near miss happened.

A 77-year-old woman was attempting to park her car outside the store when she accelerated, mounted the footpath and slammed into a wall.

While the car just nicked the side of the man's leg, if he had left his car moments later it could have been fatal.

"It could have been terrible, she could have killed the poor fellow," witness Helen Byfield told 9News.

The impact startled customers inside the Foodland and the car park as a massive bang sounded and glass scattered across the ground.

"It was just so loud, it was this massive bang — you could hear the glass falling to the floor and then she didn't come in all that far because the trolley barrier stopped it. But yeah, it was just really loud," witness Lauren Pickford said.

Witnesses said the driver appeared in shock and she was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre with minor injuries.

"She was, you know, crying and screaming. But she was okay physically — but just very shaken by it," Ms Pickford said.

Customers are now calling for more protective bollards to be installed to prevent something like this from happening again.
