One dead, multiple people missing after fire in Sydney unit complex

One person is dead and multiple others are unaccounted for after a fire broke out in an apartment complex in Sydney's Inner West.

Fire crews were called to the complex on Young St, Croydon, at about 6am after an "explosion" sparked a fire on the ground floor.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry said about 30 people were evacuated from the building, with a couple being assessed by ambulance paramedics and at least one taken to hospital.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is underway.

"It is a timely reminder that fires happen across all communities, all times of the day," Dewberry said.

"Smoke alarms are important for this."

The street remains closed off and likely will remain so for the rest of the morning and afternoon.

Dewberry said Fire and Rescue would work to support residents who would require alternative accommodation.
