Crocodile euthanised after attacking two Australian soldiers

A crocodile that attacked two Australian soldiers on Queensland's Far North Coast over the weekend has been killed.

The two men had been swimming near the Lockhart River, 800km north of Cairns, when they were attacked by the 2.5-metre saltwater croc.

Queensland's Environment Department said the animal was euthanised this afternoon following an investigation which had considered "many factors".

Wildlife Officer Ren Bone said the animal couldn't be relocated because it would have "negative" effects on its behaviour, adding authorities couldn't risk another attack.

"Our wildlife officers have just humanely euthanised an approximately 2.5-metre crocodile," Mr Bone said.

"The delegate takes many factors into consideration when making these decisions."

The crocodile was reportedly easy to identify by wildlife officers due to its "highly aggressive" behaviour.

"We can't leave an animal that attacked a human being in the community because that would pose a risk to them," Mr Bone said.

The two soldiers involved in the attack remain in Cairns Hospital in stable conditions.
