Man arrested after going on Melbourne carjacking spree

A Melbourne resident has described feeling in a dream-like state when he confronted an intruder in his home last night.

Peter King was watching TV in his Caufield North property when he heard a disturbance and discovered a stranger standing in his kitchen.

"It was almost like it was a dream," Peter King told 9News.

"I woke up this morning and said to Jeanie, I said 'did that really happen last night?'

Mr King said he asked the man what he was doing in his home, to which the intruder replied: "I'm a friend of George".

"I said, who's George? And then I said I think you better leave," Mr King said.

It was at this point the intruder left, but not before stealing Mr King's car keys.

After failing to start Mr King's star, the man ran off and allegedly attempted to steal another vehicle nearby.

"I was shocked at the beginning," another resident told 9News.

"I wouldn't have expected it to happen especially in this area."

The alleged thief continued his crime spree in nearby Mile End Road in Carnegie just after 8.30pm where he allegedly broke into a house and stole the resident's car.

The stolen car was then dumped at Stanley Street in Brighton a short time later, with the man fleeing the scene on foot.

He allegedly attempted to steal a number of other cars before being tracked down with the help of the dog squad.

Police arrested a 31-year-old man in connection to the burglaries and carjackings.
