Horse trainer Les Samba 'owed $200k' before murder: police

Horse trainer Les Samba owed $200,000 to an international drug syndicate suspected of orchestrating his murder, detectives have revealed.

Police have extended the investigation of Samba's death to include Sydney and his home town of Adelaide following two calls from an unknown person.

That caller, who is urged to come forward, is now believed to either be Samba's shooter, or somebody with close ties to the people who ordered the trainer's death.

Mr Samba is also believed to have had links to the crime figures that had him killed.

"We believe the motive ­revolves around money and drugs," Purana taskforce detective Inspector ­Andrew Gustke told News Corp.

Detectives are in NSW and Western Australia this morning looking for more evidence as their inquiry into the notorious unsolved murder gains fresh momentum.

Mr Samba, a father-of-two from Adelaide, had been in Melbourne for the Inglis yearling sales when he was shot dead on the night of February 27, 2011.

Police now know horses were not his only area of interest.

"We have uncovered, as part of our inquiries, that Mr Samba did have links to organised crime identities," Insp. Gustke said.

A reward of $1 million has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those ­involved in the killing.
