'Super-human effort' made to save life of toddler killed by dogs

A motel worker, police and medical staff made a "super-human effort" to save the life of a toddler who was mauled to death by two dogs, NSW Police say.

Jyedon Pollard was playing with the animals at the Country Gardens Motor Inn in Cowra in the NSW Central West in front of his mum and two sisters just after 10am yesterday.

The two-year-old suffered serious injuries to his face and arms and was taken to Cowra Hospital in a critical condition.

He was then airlifted to The Children's Hospital in Westmead where he later died.

Chifley police superintendent Bob Noble said there were no direct witnesses to the attack, which happened at the rear of the motel.

"The police along with the medical staff at the hospital made what I would describe as a superhuman effort to sustain the life of that young child," Noble said.

He said the motel owner gave the child first aid and drove the mother and child to hospital.

"It would be a horrific situation to be confronted by but he acted very bravely and very concisely.

"Everyone is devastated, when a child so young dies in such terrible fashion, it's upsetting to a lot of people."

Noble said the dogs were secure in a yard before the attack but further investigations were underway to determine how the attack occurred.

A local near the scene told 9News she heard a bit of screaming and then it got louder.

"I saw the kids screaming, I looked out the window across the road and I saw some guy carrying a little kid who was absolutely screaming and people were panicked," the local said.

The two dogs - a Rottweiler and a cattle dog - were seized by the local council.

NSW Police have not determined whether any charges would be laid.
