Scott Bolton flees to Townsville after indecent assault charges

North Queensland Cowboys forward Scott Bolton has fled Sydney and it is unclear if he will play against the Wests Tigers on Thursday after he was charged with indecent assault over an incident at a Bondi Beach bar.

Police were called to Bondi Beach Public Bar on Saturday at 10.50pm after a woman reported she had been indecently assaulted. 

Bolton, 30, was arrested at Waverley Police Station on Sunday morning and charged with assault with an act of indecency.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on June 19.

Bolton was out with Cowboys teammates after their resounding win over the Penrith Panthers in Bathurst the previous night.

Bolton has flown back to Townsville to be with wife Michelle, with Cowboys officials seen visiting his home this morning. The rest of his team is still in Sydney for their Thursday night clash with Wests Tigers.

9NEWS has attempted to contact Bolton but did not get a response.

While the NRL says Bolton can continue to play while his court case is pending it appears unlikely he will return to Sydney to play in the game at Leichhardt Oval.

The Cowboys have former Brisbane prop Francis Molo in their squad, who is a chance to come into Paul Green's 17 for Bolton.

Speaking in Sydney this morning, Cowboys five-eighth Michael Morgan confirmed Bolton was not in camp with the team.

"He's a really nice guy and gets along with everyone in the group," Morgan told reporters. "I'm sure its not a good situaton for himself and what he's going through.

"Not just as his teammates but as his friend, we support him."

Morgan said players always faced a risk going into public spaces.

"Everyone was in the venue," hooker Jake Granville said.

"It (the charge) is not what you want in your lead up and we're sticking together.

"We've got a big job to do on Thursday night against the Tigers."

Bolton has played more than 200 games for the Cowboys since his 2007 debut.

In a statement released yesterday, the Cowboys said the club was cooperating with the police investigation.

"The North Queensland Cowboys are aware of an alleged incident involving one of the club's players overnight," the club said.

"The club is co-operating with police in their investigation of the matter and have informed the NRL Integrity Unit.

"The club will be making no further comment at this stage."
