Dozens of cows escaped from a South Gippsland property in Victoria's east overnight, with one later found stuck on a trampoline.

About 40 cows fled the rural property, causing chaos for the owner to track them down.

Majority of the cows were rounded up and returned home, but one was later found inside an in-ground trampoline, triggering a major rescue operation.

Resident Kay Laing, who found the cow on her trampoline, used a tractor to rescue the animal and called its owner.

The cow reportedly could not stand on her hooves.

"I don't know how long it took to get them off but we were back in bed by 3.30am," she told 3AW's Ross and Russel.

"I'm tipping she would've been pretty terrified."

The cow was not injured and walked about a kilometre to return home.
