Counter-terrorism police take over Logan movie theatre for simulated attack training

Counter-terrorism police have taken over the Logan Entertainment Centre to rehearse their response to a lone gunman-style attack in Queensland.

Today’s simulated attack featured a potential “worst case scenario”, with hostages taken by an armed gunman inside a movie theatre.

The “attacker” was eventually taken down by police, with the assistance of elite SERT officers.

Queensland Police are stepping up their training to deal with the perceived threat of attacks.

“Virtually a day doesn't go by in the world where there's not some sort of a lone shooter incident,” Superintendent Ben Hanbidge said.

“Certainly in the United States we've seen a lot of it lately.

“Fortunately it’s not something [Australian] police are exposed to on a daily basis.”

Australia’s terror threat sits at “probable”, the middle level in the five-tiered system.

“There’s no suggested threat that it’s going to happen, but it really would be naïve to think that it’s not probably going to happen at some stage,” Supt Hanbidge said.
