Queenslanders facing hike in council rates, how does your suburb fare?

Queenslanders are facing paying $37 per year extra in council rates despite Brisbane’s Lord Mayor saying this year’s budget has delivered big bang for buck.   

Rates will increase by an average 2.4 percent, with Queenslanders forking out an extra 72 cents per week.

The hardest hit suburb will be Seven Hills with a rise of 6.6 percent.

However, due to changing land values, residents of Kangaroo Point will get a rates drop by an average of almost 6 per cent.

Full pensioners will get a 40 percent rebate up to $990, and part pensioners will get a 20 percent discount up to $462.

“We’ve tried to keep that as low as we can, but we believe we are advancing the city, the important needs of the city into the future, these things cost money,” Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said.

Over a third of the $3.07 billion budget is going to new and existing roads, including $223 million this year to the Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade.
