Victoria eradicates COVID-19 from aged care as state celebrates zero new coronavirus cases for sixth day in a row

Coronavirus has been eradicated from Victoria's aged care sector, with the last remaining active case of COVID-19 cleared at a facility late yesterday.

The Department of Health and Human Services said before today, the last time the state had no active cases in aged care facilities was on June 15.

"The clearance of this final active case represents a significant achievement in Victoria's response to the second wave of this pandemic," a DHHS statement read.

The milestone comes as Victoria recorded zero new cases of coronavirus for a sixth consecutive day, with no additional lives lost.

The latest numbers take the 14-day rolling average in metropolitan Melbourne down to 1.4.

There are 20 active cases of COVID-19 remaining in Victoria.

More than 13,000 COVID-19 tests were undertaken yesterday.

The state's streak of zero new COVID-19 cases prompted the borders to reopen with NSW come November 23.

"On Monday, 23 November - the NSW/Victoria border will reopen," NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Twitter.

"We need to keep moving forward as we live with COVID-19."

Premier Daniel Andrews said the border announcement was "very good news" and proved NSW had confidence in Victoria to keep COVID-19 cases low.

But Mr Andrews urged Victorians to remain in the state and support the local economy.

"I would urge all Victorians, don't be going to Sydney for Christmas unless you absolutely have to. If you want a summer holiday - we have lots of opportunities here," he said.
