A coroner will investigate the deaths of five residents at a coronavirus-stricken Melbourne aged care facility.

Victorian State Coroner Judge John Cain will look at the deaths at St Basil's Home for the Aged in Fawkner and the circumstances in which they occurred.

St Basil's is home to the most COVID-19 cases in Victorian aged care, with 159 linked to the facility.

The investigation follows allegations of mistreatment and staff failing to wear proper PPE amid the outbreak.

"His Honour has directed Victoria Police to compile a coronial brief of evidence," a statement from the Coroners Court of Victoria read.

"The focus of the coronial investigation will be determined following receipt of the brief."

Judge Cain will have the power to make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in future following the investigation.

Victoria Police confirmed to 9News it was assisting the Victorian State Coroner with enquiries relating to deaths at aged care facilities.
