Dancing banned in nightclubs as some restrictions to return in the ACT

Restrictions are set to return in the Australian Capital Territory as health officials try to curb the spread of COVID-19.

From 12pm on Saturday, people must be seated while eating and drinking at hospitality and licensed businesses, including cafes, bars, and nightclubs.

Dancing will also be banned at these venues.

Nightclubs will be allowed to operate bars within existing density limits.

"Mandatory face masks, density limits and other public health measures for businesses and indoor venues will also continue," ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said in a statement.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said Canberrans are also strongly advised to think about the size of any gatherings they want to have in or outside the home.

"If you can hold your gathering outdoors, then please do. If your gathering is indoors, consider how many guests you invite," Ms Stephen-Smith said in a statement.

Most category two and category three elective surgeries are also expected to be paused for the next six to eight weeks.

Ms Stephen-Smith said difficult decision came because the ACT health system is starting to come under higher pressure as more than 230 healthcare workers are currently in quarantine.

"Postponing elective surgeries is always incredibly difficult but taking this action will enable additional health care staff to be redeployed to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak," she said.
