Sydney residents struggling with cost of living during coronavirus

More Sydney residents are struggling to make bill payments and put food on the table during the coronavirus outbreak.

Figures obtained exclusively by 9News show one-in-four residents are struggling to pay utility bills on time, and one-in-five are unable to make mortgage or rental payments.

The survey, from the NSW Council of Social Services (NCSOS), also revealed one-in-five people are unable to make minimum repayments on credit cards.

"It did some as a surprise," Joanna Quilty, NCSOS CEO told 9News.

"It's people who are working, it's people who are paying off mortgages, it's people in the private rental market who are experiencing very similar issues to those in low income households."

The council is calling from more support from state or federal governments as more Australians are going without, or forced to turn to friends and family for support.

"A lot of the measures people are taking really hark back to another era and are quite shocking in some regards," Ms Quilty said.
