Queensland schools remain open for term two but only to vulnerable children and those of essential workers amid coronavirus

Queensland schools will be open for term two to cater only to children of essential workers and the vulnerable, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced.

The decision will be reviewed midway through the term on May 15 to help give some parents "some certainty and some clarity".

The move to a home-based learning model for other students starts next Monday, April 20.

Ms Palaszczuk said it was not a decision the Government arrived at lightly.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the state government was allocating extra resources to enable children to learn from home.

 "For children who don't have a laptop, schools can loan them devices," Ms Grace said.

 "We've worked with Telstra to secure more than 5000 sim cars to make sure students without internet connectivity can access online resources."

Negotiations between television networks and the state government are also underway to deliver lessons via TV.

Ms Palaszczuk also praised Queenslanders' "extraordinary" efforts over the Easter break, with only 35 positive cases of coronavirus recorded over the three-day period.

Overnight seven additional cases of COVID-19 were recorded, bringing the state's total to 987.

"I really do want to do a big shoutout to everyone who has done the right thing and kept within the social distancing laws," Ms Palaszczuk said.

But there were still almost 500 fines handed out, including a few for bizarre reasons.

A helicopter pilot travelling for a picnic was fined not once, but twice.

While another person in Far North Queensland was fined for going on a Tinder date.
