Police seeking new coronavirus fine powers in South Australia

Reports of people breaching self-quarantine and self-isolation orders are flooding into South Australian police.

The force says it's currently handling a large number of reports from members of the public related to both people and businesses suspected of not complying with current restrictions.

It says a process has been established with SA Health to triage the calls to determine the most appropriate response which may include police attendance.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said the force was ramping up its checks on people in self-isolation.

Right now, anybody caught flaunting the directive would face a court date and a maximum potential fine of $20,000.

9news understands police have asked the government to consider new laws that would allow on-the-spot fines – which in Victoria are for $1000.
