New South Wales-Victoria border could open in 'weeks not months'

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has declared the border with Victoria is likely to open in "weeks not months" foreshadowing a more official announcement later in the week.

Ms Berejiklian said at a press conference today that coronavirus cases in the southern state are stabilising, and discussions have begun about when the hard border can be lifted.

"We're not going to have that border remain in place a day longer than it needs to be because we know how many people are suffering as a consequence," she said.

"Now that Victoria is down to zero or just a handful of community transmissions a day, that gives us pause to reflect on when that two-week period starts for us

"And of course, we'll base that on health advice, but I certainly want to give the signal to the people of NSW we are talking weeks not months in terms of when the Victoria border may come down."

Ms Berejiklian said the timing will be based on health advice.

NSW recorded seven new coronavirus cases today, six of those in hotel quarantine.

The one local case is a child who went to the Flip Out Indoor Trampoline Park at Prestons.

Dr Kerry Chant said this is the second child to contract the virus from the venue last Saturday.

Victoria recorded no new cases, and no deaths.
