Border mayor pleads for patience over 'dog's breakfast' of a closure

There were heavy delays this morning on the NSW-Victoria border with some residents waiting 90 minutes to get to work.

Albury Mayor Kevin Mack compared the commute to a "dog's breakfast".

In a press conference today, Mr Mack said there is still a lot of work to be done.

"We need to massage the whole process and it's a rolling stock, let's just give it a bit more patience," he said.

Wodonga Mayor Anna Speedie also had a response to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian's plea for border community residents to avoid travelling to other parts of the state.

Ms Speedie said it couldn't be done.

"When you work in Wodonga, when you work in the health system, when you work in any of those essential services, that's not possible" she said.

On Monday, Albury-Wodonga broke its 99-day COVID-19-free streak, with three confirmed cases recorded so far this week.

Albury-Wodonga Health CEO Michael Kalimnios said two of the cases were from the same household.

"We're pretty confident that there hasn't been a contact, it seems like there contact has been limited," he said.

Businesses are already feeling the pressure. 

Jullie Zeinert lives in Victoria's Mudgegonga, but her clothes store is across the border in Albury. 

Ms Zeinert said she wasn't able to get a permit last night. 

"When I got to the checkpoint, I showed my license, some shop invoices with the current date on there so they knew I owned a business," she said.
