'Share this sadness': NSW ski fields close after state-wide lockdown

NSW ski fields have closed after the government announced a state-wide snap lockdown today.

Perisher and Thredbo will both pause their seasons until it is safe to re-open.

This afternoon, Deputy Premier John Barilaro revealed the entire state will go into lockdown after 466 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths were recorded overnight.

It is being done on an abundance of caution, Mr Barilaro told ABC24.

Many regional centres are already in lockdown because of positive cases in those areas.

"The NSW Government has declared a seven day state-wide lockdown from from 5:00pm 14 August 2021," Perisher said in a statement.

"This means that unfortunately Perisher's operations will close until it is safely possible to reopen. We know that this is difficult news for our guests, employees and local communities, and want you to know that we share this sadness with you."

Thredbo said it would do the same.

"Following the NSW Government announcement on 14 August 2021, Thredbo will pause its winter season until we are able to open again," a statement said.

"Anyone who lives, works or has been in the locations that stay-at-home orders apply to cannot travel for non-essential reasons. If you are required to follow the stay-at-home orders, we ask you to stay at home (or return home) to help ensure the safety of our guests, staff and the wider community."

The lockdown is so far slated to last for seven-days, however authorities may re-assess over the coming week.

It comes as greater restrictions were put in place for Sydney in a bid to combat the outbreak.

New non-compliance measures, a tightening of restrictions on movement across the city and changes to the singles bubble for some LGAs will be introduced from Monday.
