South Australia takes first steps toward opening up

Big-name stores like Apple, Kathmandu and Cotton On are opening back up in Adelaide after weeks of closed doors.

Workers are wearing masks and checking the temperatures of every customer.

Many hope it's a sign of things to come, with an announcement on restrictions to be made tomorrow by Prime Minister Scott Morrison after his meeting with the National Cabinet.

The resumption of local sport and travel within South Australia are two of the state's top priorities.

"We've got one shot to get this right, so there will be a sensible, logical easing of restrictions," Premier Steven Marshall said.

But as the state opens up, it could still close down further to outsiders, with Police Commissioner Grant Stevens looking at toughening border restrictions even further.

"Our biggest risk and concern is travellers coming into the state," he said.

"So we're having a look at how we can put further obligations onto those travelers to protect our community but also enable that travel to still occur, because we're talking about essential travel."

Mothers Day celebrations can go ahead, but gatherings must be limited to 10 people, and social distancing must continue.
