WA prepares for re-opened pubs as Perth cancels major event

Western Australia will begin lifting its lockdown restrictions from tomorrow, but there are sobering signs ahead as the state cancelled one of its biggest events.

The Australia Day Skyworks firework spectacular has already been struck off the list, despite being eight months away.

The City of Perth council released a statement saying that the uncertainty around risk factors in eight months made it impossible to plan for.

"In working to support businesses, ratepayers and residents impacted by COVID-19 and to help the economy recover in the long-run, the City's revenue and expenditure is being shifted to more urgent needs and priorities of our local and regional community," the statement said.

Christmas and New Year celebrations could also be axed, with a decision on them forthcoming.

Meanwhile, pubs around the state are preparing to re-open under a strict 20-person limit.

"If we get 100 people in here a day, for 100 means, then we're probably half of where we were before, so really looking forward to that," said Mark Pink of the Pink Duck in Rockingham, south of Perth.

Premier Mark McGowan admitted a 20-person limit was not enough for many venues to open, or maintain a profit.

Alongside pubs, community pools, libraries and some regional  borders are also set to open.

Mr McGowan urged workers to head back to the workplace and called for leniency if pubs and restaurants struggle with tomorrow's new rules.

Western Australia had no new cases of COVID-19 overnight, keeping the state total at 557.

There are only five active cases statewide, with one person in hospital.
