Victoria records most COVID-19 deaths as over 28,000 new cases identified

Australian states and territories have today released their second weekly COVID-19 update, with daily reports being a thing of the past after almost two years.

There's been over 28,000 new cases of COVID-19 identified across the country in the last week, but that number could be much higher as vigilance around testing drops.

Victoria recorded the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths.

Here's a breakdown of data released by the states and territories.

New South Wales

In the past seven days New South Wales recorded 14,170 new cases of COVID-19 and 69 deaths in people who had the virus.

As of 4pm yesterday, 1176 people were in hospital with the virus, including 24 in ICU.

Victoria

Victoria reported 10,360 new cases of COVID-19 this week.

There were an average of 169 people a day in hospital with the virus, eight in intensive care.

A total of 80 deaths were reported in the past seven days.

Australian Capital Territory

The ACT has recorded 730 new COVID-19 cases in the past week.

There were no deaths identified in people with the virus.

There are currently 69 people in hospital. None of those are being treated in intensive care.

South Australia

South Australian health officials reported 3037 new cased of COVID-19 in the last week.

The state recorded 23 deaths in people with the virus.

There were 50 people in hospital with the virus, including six in ICU, as of 11.59pm yesterday.

Queensland

In the week up until September 20, Queensland recorded 9166 new COVID-19 cases and 37 deaths of people who had the virus.

Health officials said 152 people were in hospital with COVID-19, including seven in ICU.
