ACT records 13 new infections as chief minister flags big announcement for tomorrow

The Australian Capital Territory has recorded 13 new coronavirus cases.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said seven of those new infections can be linked to known clusters or cases as he warned of a big announcement coming tomorrow.

Just two were in quarantine for their whole infectious period, while 10 spent some time in the community causing some concern among health officials.

There are now 245 active cases in the community.

Mr Barr has urged residents in the ACT to come forward for their COVID-19 vaccine.

"It's a big week across the territory as Pfizer doses increases," Mr Barr said.

He expects "thousands upon thousands to receive their first doses from GPs and pharmacists" in the coming days.

The territory is due to pass 75 per cent of first doses in eligible adults, he said.

Children over 12 are the focus of a new vaccine push as extra Pfizer doses arrive from overseas.

From Monday, September 20, children aged 12-15 will be able to book for Pfizer at a government clinic.

But due to demand, appointments are likely to be open from October or November, he said.

Parents and carers are urged to approach their GP or wait for Moderna which "might be a quicker path".

"It is worth looking around to see the quickest path for vaccination," Mr Barr said.

"But we have a lot of 16-to-39 year-olds to vaccinate (before then)," he added.

An announcement is due to be made tomorrow on a possible measures to contain the number of infectious people in the community, Mr Barr said.

"We will be meeting this afternoon and tomorrow before an announcement tomorrow at 11.45am," he said.

Yesterday the ACT recorded 15 new infections on Saturday and Sunday and 24 on Friday.
