ACT records 12 new local coronavirus cases, half infectious in the community

There have been 12 new local coronavirus cases reported in the ACT, with six linked to known cases or clusters.

Four remain under investigation and two cases have no known links, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

Two were in quarantine during their infectious period, at least six were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of four is under investigation.

"We now have 12 people hospitalised with COVID-19 and three in intensive care," Mr Barr said.

The ACT's chief minister reassured the community the lockdown is working, but said there is a risk if the territory opens up too early.

"The Delta strain is very, very challenging to contain," he said.

"And as today confirms, we still have people infectious in the community.

"We will require ongoing public health measures in place beyond this week.

"We do not want all the hard work over the last few weeks to go to waste by opening up too early.

"Our lockdown measures are effective in reducing the spread of the virus, but it is concerning we are still getting cases infectious in the community."
