Cormann douses suggestions he may resign

Senior federal Liberal frontbencher Mathias Cormann has scotched suggestions he could quit if the coalition loses the election in May.

The finance minister is not up for re-election, with three years left to run on his Senate term.

However, there has been some speculation Senator Cormann could walk away from federal politics after the upcoming poll.

"I'm absolutely in it for the long haul," he told ABC radio on Monday.

With opinion polls pointing to a Labor victory, Senator Cormann would be relegated to the the opposition benches for several years.

The minister emerged from last year's Liberal leadership spill a politically diminished figure after supporting failed challenger Peter Dutton.
