Footage captured a terrifying arrest outside a youth centre in Melbourne's north last night.

Officers attempted to intercept a white Toyota SUV in the car park, before the driver got out of the car wielding a knife, police said.

Bystanders appeared to kick the man while he was on the ground, with one pushing a shopping trolley towards him.

The alleged weapon, which 9News understands was wrestled from the man, was visible in the video.

A 43-year-old Craigieburn man has been interviewed by police over the incident.

No charges have been laid.
