Contractor asbestos warning in WA schools

Building contractors working at schools are being reminded to follow correct procedures when working with asbestos after a scare at Western Australia's largest public high school.

Willetton Senior High School was temporarily closed last week after asbestos residue was found during an inspection of a building due for demolition.

The school reopened on Monday after experts thoroughly cleaned and tested more than 200 classrooms on site.

WA Education Department infrastructure executive director John Fischer said contractors at the school had not followed the correct procedures for working with asbestos, including checking the school's asbestos register.

Mr Fisher said the department was now working with all schools and the Department of Finance's Building Management and Works unit to ensure contractors were reminded of their responsibilities when working with asbestos.
