UPDATE: Explosive device found at north Sydney is a smoke grenade

The explosive device found in a north Sydney backyard, forcing the evacuation of a residential street, has now been identified as a 1970s smoke grenade.
Construction workers renovating the home on Atchison Street, Crows Next made the discovery at about 1pm today.
"My friend excavated what appeared to be a sort of land mine," worker Jack Mortley said.
The young men called emergency services who were there in a flash.
"Literally within two minutes the Police were here," worker Ben Roberts said.
Explosive ordinance disposal officers from the Army were brought in to examine the device.
Just before 3pm it was taken away and destroyed.
Atchison Street has now been re-opened.
