Construction worker’s blunder sparks explosion on Sydney worksite

A well-meaning construction worker has inadvertently caused an explosion on a Sydney worksite.

Dashcam footage shows the worker passing copper piping from the ground floor of a Kogarah building under-construction to a colleague on the first floor about 8.20am today AEDT.

However, the copper nicks a power line on the way up, and the resulting explosion lights up the worksite with a bright light.

NSW Fire and Rescue were alerted to the electrical explosion, and have confirmed a struck power line as the cause.  

The worker was not seriously injured in the blast, and drove himself to hospital a short time later.

The worksite is located the corner of Gray Street and Princes Highway, and the explosion briefly blacked out local traffic lights.

A SafeWork NSW spokesperson said the worker was treated "as a precaution" after receiving an electric shock from the low-voltage lines.

"A SafeWork NSW inspector is responding to the incident," a spokesperson said.
