Conscience vote likely on same-sex marriage

Parliament could be heading for an historic vote on same-sex marriage, one that Liberal Party MP’s will be free to vote on.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Coalition party rooms are likely to decide on a conscience vote during the coming spring session of parliament.

Speaking to the TODAY show this morning, Brisbane radio 97.3FM presenter Robin Bailey said the vote was a “long time coming” and she was hopeful same-sex marriage would soon be legalised.

“The word in Canberra is that a lot of liberal MPs will vote against it but at least we are having it, at least this is happening,” she said.

“If it doesn't happen this time fingers crossed it will happen next time.”

The matter is expected to reach a crucial stage in the next two sitting fortnights.

“It’s just one of those things as a government we have to support people to love who they want to love,” Ms Bailey said.
