Confidence data due post-Greece, China

Confidence figures this week will gauge whether retailers can expect lean times ahead after an all but brief flurry of activity after the May budget.

The ANZ-Roy Morgan weekly consumer confidence gauge will be released on Tuesday after tumbling 4.6 per cent last week as people worried whether the Greek debt crisis and the stock market crash in China would have ramifications for Australia.

On Wednesday, the Westpac-Melbourne Institute monthly consumer confidence survey will be released.

The report for June slumped 6.9 per cent, wiping out the 6.4 per cent rise that followed shortly after the May budget.

National Australia Bank's business confidence report for June will also be released on Tuesday.

In May this report jumped to a nine-month high immediately after the budget.

While it will be interesting to see whether the June report was able to maintain the same levels as May, it will not capture the more recent ructions in Greece and China, which sent the Australian dollar reeling to a six-year low - below 74 US cents at one stage last week.
