Government spreads the word about $944m Brisbane Metro project holding gathering for local and international businesses

Companies are now bidding for Brisbane's $944 million Metro project.

The heads of hundreds of local and international companies have met to hear how they could benefit from Brisbane's $944 million dollar Metro upgrade.

The project will see passengers enjoying 60 brand new buses, which will travel through tunnels beneath Adelaide Street in the City.

Some services will also pull up to a brand new platform at an underground station, near the corner of Grey and Melbourne Streets, in South Brisbane's Cultural Precint.

"This project will be a city changing project, that will change the way people travel around Brisbane" Acting Mayor, Adrian Schrinner says.

Following an industry briefing Tuesday morning, local and international companies are now fighting for their involvement in the project.

"We've had interest in China, in Turkey even. So different parts of the world there's been interest. We've had people travel here today from overseas" Mr Schrinner says.

But the Opposition has slammed the procurement as pre-emptive.

"We have no approvals from the state government to use the busway. So we're asking businesses to tender for work that may be delayed or may not happen at all" Jared Cassidy says.

The Labor Councillor is also concerned local bus builders are not being favoured.

"Volgren, which is a Brisbane based company, builds our current bus fleet" Mr Cassidy says.

"What we want to see is our local bus builders given the opportunity to bid for this work in a fair way."

Provided the project does go ahead, it will link Eight Mile Plains to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

It's also promising to get passengers home in half the time, with services running every three minutes during peak periods.

Prospective passengers say they want the bus station design to reflect the vibrant cultural hub.

"A lot of colour would be nice."

"Some modern architecture would be good."

The council is aiming to start construction at the end of next year.
