Flooded roads cause traffic hell for second straight night in Sydney

Commuters are facing another long ride home with roads flooded throughout Sydney and public transport in disarray tonight.

The Georges River broke its banks this afternoon, prompting street closures throughout the city's southwest in areas including Milperra, Moorebank and Hinchinbrook.

Traffic lights also remain out at locations throughout the city.

Bus passengers can expect delays in all flood-affected areas around the state, while bus services will also replace trains on several northern and southern train lines.

The NSW Transport Management Centre has provided the following advice:

FERRIES

• Buses are replacing Parramatta River ferries between Parramatta and Kissing Point Wharf as Parramatta Weir is overflowing.

• The Cronulla to Bundeena, Palm Beach to Ettalong and Empire Bay to Woy Woy ferries are not operating.

ROADS IN SYDNEY

• Henry Lawson Drive - closed in both directions between Milperra Road and Haig Avenue outside Bankstown Airport

• Newbridge Road - closed between Henry Lawson Drive and Governor Macquarie Drive

• Oxford Falls Road - closed at Oxford Falls

• Audley Weir - closed in the Royal National Park

• Roads also remain closed in many other suburbs including Riverstone, Prestons, Kenthurst, Marsden Park, Shanes Park, Rouse Hill, Schofields, Annangrove, McGraths Hill, Cattai, Maraylya, Glenfield

NEWCASTLE/HUNTER/CENTRAL COAST

• New England Highway - only one lane open under stop/slow conditions 2kms north of Singleton due to a serious car accident

• New England Highway - closed in both directions at Maitland

• Pacific Highway - heavy traffic between Hexham and Tarro. Hexham Bridge is open.

• Pacific Highway - closed in both directions at Lisarow due to a fallen tree on power lines

• Main Road - closed between Heddon Greta and Gillieston Heights

• Northcott Drive - closed southbound in Adamstown Heights

• Cessnock Road - closed in Maitland and Abermain

• Roads also remain closed in many other suburbs throughout Newcastle, Singleton, Port Stephens and Maitland areas

TRAINS

• Trains are now running between Wyong and Hamilton on the Central Coast and Newcastle line

• The Hunter line remains closed between Hamilton and Scone and Dungog due to flooding, with a limited bus service running

• The South Coast Line is also closed between Kiama and Oak Flats, with buses replacing trains
