Indigenous protest shuts down Gold Coast light rail

Powered by

Indigenous activists have caused a temporary shut down of the Gold Coast light rail system.

About 50 protesters stood across the tracks on Scarborough Street in Southport for about two hours from 4pm, blocking the passage of trams.

The protest then continued through the nearby Australia Fair shopping centre.

The light rail system is a crucial part of the Gold Coast public transport system for the Commonwealth Games.

A protest last week at Main Beach delayed the passage of the Queen's Baton Relay.

The group has coined the event the "Stolenwealth Games" and aim to draw attention to issues that still plague Aboriginal Australians.
