Scottish boxer ‘glasses teen’ in Gold Coast nightclub

A former heavy weight Scottish boxer has been charged over the glassing a teenager at a Surfers Paradise nightclub.

Police have charged Stephen Lavelle, 27, over the altercation at the nightclub last night.

It was just after 3am when police were called to the night club precinct after reports of a dance floor scuffle.

Police say an 18-year-old woman was punched in the face, and an 18-year-old man was struck in the face with a glass, causing a significant laceration.

Levelle, who is not on the Gold Coast on any official capacity, would not answer questions from reporters has he was released in blood-stained clothes from the watch house around 8am.

He is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on April 30 on one charge of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count of common assault.

The male victim was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with a cut to his face.

Levelle, who won bronze for Scotland in boxing at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, now lives in Melbourne.

Team Scotland has condemned the incident and said it’s not the behaviour they expect from athletes past or present.
