Popular kids' play product recalled over asbestos fears

Another range of coloured sand products has been pulled from the shelves at Officeworks.

The Kadink Decorative Sand 10g six-pack contains vials of pink, purple, yellow, white, blue, and green sand which can be used for decoration or play to develop fine motor skills.

The product safety watchdog said it was being recalled because the sand could include asbestos, which is a prohibited substance in Australia.

The sand, which has been sold between 2020 and 2025 at Officeworks outlets, could pose a potential health risk.

Asbestos has been detected in some samples after lab testing.

"Importantly, respirable asbestos has not been detected in any of the tested samples," Product Safety Australia said in its notice.

"The release of respirable asbestos fibres is unlikely to occur in its current state, unless the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverising.

"The risk that any asbestos found is likely to be airborne or fine enough for inhalation is low."

However, people are urged to stop using the product immediately.

They should wear disposable gloves and a mask and place the sand in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double-tape the bag securely, and keep it out of reach of children.

Customers should contact Officeworks on 1300 633 423, 8am to 6pm AEST, Monday to Friday, for a full refund after the disposal is complete.

The six-pack is the second range of sand products to be recalled in recent days over asbestos fears.
