A US man has been arrested after allegedly robbing a bank before showering the street outside with the stolen cash on Monday afternoon.

David Wayne Oliver, 65, is accused of walking into the Academy Bank in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and telling a teller that he had a weapon in his pocket.

After walking outside with a bag of cash, he began throwing it "all over the place", witnesses said.

"He started throwing money out of the bag and then said, 'Merry Christmas!'" Dion Pascale told KKTV 11.

Bystanders picked up the cash and returned it to the bank.

Oliver then walked over to a Starbucks coffee shop next door and waited for police to arrive.

He was taken into custody without incident.

Police said Oliver was not armed.
