Gary Pert resigns as Collingwood CEO

Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert has resigned from his role with the AFL club.

Pert has been in the job for more than a decade, having been appointed to the role in May 2007.

His resignation isn’t totally unexpected, with plenty of talk in AFL circles about his future for much of the 2017 season.

Magpies chairman Eddie McGuire has paid tribute to Pert's service.

"It is with a heavy heart that I accepted the resignation of our chief executive Gary Pert," McGuire said.

"There is only one way of measuring the tenure of a CEO or a leader in any organisation, and that is 'is the place better than when it was taken over?'"

"The 10 years that Gary Pert has been chief executive have been unbelievable."

Pert told the media it's the right time for him to move on.

"It was a decision that was made after quite a period of time thinking about where the club is at," Pert said.

"I think we've been very transparent about the fact that we've engaged into a process of re-defining what the Collingwood Football Club has to be in the future."

Pert denied he's in line to become the next AFL General Manager of Operations, after Simon Lethlean resigned earlier this month.

"My next step is to take a break, I've been in executive roles now for 25 years.

"I can guarantee you I'm not thinking of any roles."

Pert oversaw the Magpies’ 2010 premiership, and was at the helm when the controversial decision was made to replace long-term coach Mick Malthouse with Nathan Buckley.

The Magpies have been struggling on the field in 2017, with their win over West Coast just their seventh win this season, as they languish in 13th spot on the ladder, with continued speculation surrounding the future of Buckley.
