Work halted at Melbourne tunnel site after collapse of rock and soil

Work on part of Melbourne's West Gate Tunnel Project has been halted today after a spillage of rock and soil.

Authorities said there has been no impact on workers and the area has been made secure.

"There has been minor movement of rock and soil in one cross passage between the two tunnels near the northern portal in Yarraville," a spokesperson for the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority said.

The incident was first reported by a caller to 3GB radio this morning who said a family member had been working at the site.

Katrina told broadcaster Neil Mitchell the incident happened between 8.30am and 9am today and it appeared there had been no injuries.

She said the collapse happened in a cross-passage when a robot machine was digging between two tunnels.

A photograph published by 3AW showed a large pile of rubble in the tunnel.

The tunnel, which will be an alternative to the Melbourne's heavily congested West Gate Bridge, is scheduled to be finished this year.
