Coles stores have resumed operating after a technical glitch caused closures for three hours across the country this morning.

The nationwide outage lasted from 6am until 9am and affected the supermarket giant's cash registers.

Printed notices were seen outside a number of stores including Lane Cove in Sydney.

The sign on its front entrance stated: “Coles is currently experiencing a state-wide IT system issue and cannot process any transactions.

"We apologise for this inconvenience, however Coles will remain closed until the issue is fixed. Thank you for your understanding customers.”

The supermarket chain has since released a statement stating the issue was "out of team members' control" and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

"Earlier this morning we had some minor IT problems in some of our supermarkets which were out of our team members’ control," the statement read.
