Coles dumps men's magazine Zoo Weekly after complaints of 'rape culture'

Supermarket chain Coles today announced it is no longer stocking men's magazine Zoo Weekly following a prolonged social media campaign which accused the title of promoting "rape culture".

A petition, signed by more than 38,000 people, urged both Coles and Woolworths to stop stocking the magazine, SBS reports.

The Change.org petition was started in May by 23-year-old Melbourne woman Laura Pintur, who claimed Zoo Weekly's editorial agenda created a "diet of porn and violence".

Today, Ms Pintur, who is a member of activist group Collective Shout, which campaigns against the objectification of women in the media, got the news she was hoping for.

“By discontinuing Zoo they have demonstrated a commitment to a supportive environment for staff and a safer and more respectful community for staff and customers,” Melinda Liszewsk, a spokesperson for Collective Shout, told Mumbrella.

Ms Liszewsk says Collective Shout hope that Woolworths will now follow the lead of Coles.

Coles did not confirm whether or not their decision was based on the impact of the petition.
